The Cathedral of Freising (‘Freisinger Dom’) is an example of the development of different architecture styles throughout time. During the centuries, the Cathedral has built and rebuilt due to extensive fire. Jörg von Halsbach, the builder of the Cathedral of Our Dear Lady (“Frauenkirche”) in Munich, participated in the reconstruction, bringing some gothic aspects to the architecture (such as the dome). In the 17th century, the Cathedral was remodeled following the Renaissance style. In 1724, on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the arrival of St. Corbinian, the Asam brothers added some decorative stucco in the interior of the cathedral. The Freising Cathedral has an impressive organ and the church choir presents itself regularly.

An organ concert is organized for all attendees on Wednesday April 25th. For further information please see the programme here.

Marienplatz & Town hall

Marienplatz is the central square of Freising. Here, you will find the Town hall (‘Rathaus’). At the Town hall tower a characteristic ring of bells sounds every day at 11.55 am and 4.55 pm. The melody was composed by native Philipp Weigl, from Freising.

Weihenstephan Brewery

Freising is the home of the oldest brewery worldwide. The Weihenstephan Monastery Brewery officially started in 1040 – nearly a thousand years of history and beer. Nowadays the Bavarian State Brewery of Weihenstephan is open for visits. Here, you learn all about the brewery origin and history, as well as the secrets of brewing.

The conference dinner will take place at the restaurant of Bavarian State Brewery of Weihenstephan on Thursday April 26th. For further information please see the programme here.

TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan

Although the campus started with the University of Agriculture and Brewing, other departments were incorporated in the following years, creating the TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan (in 2000). Until the present day, students from all over the world seek for education in the center of brewing technology.

However, the school has a lot more to offer. Around 80 professors currently teach and research at the Weihenstephan campus, with the common goal to create solutions to existential challenges of global warming, population explosion, food security and fossil fuel reserves. Here, almost 5 thousand students prepare for their future careers, combining tradition and modernity in their studies.

Munich

Freising is located approximately 40 km north of Munich with a direct connection by train. Munich is the capital of Bavaria and the home of many world famous breweries (such as Augustiner, Paulaner and Hofbräu).

In addition to its beautiful gardens, palaces and historical buildings, Munich also has some tradition when it comes to sports and cars. The city houses the soccer team FC Bayern and their stadium (Allianz Arena), as well as the Olympic Park (‘Olympia Park’), built for the Olympic Games 1972 and visited daily by locals and tourists.

Right next to the Olympic Park, you can find the World of BMW.

In the city center, the main attractions are just a few steps from the Marienplatz: the New Town Hall (‘Neues Rathaus’), the Cathedral of Our Dear Lady (‘Frauenkirche’) and the Residence.

Munich is also a green capital, as for the many parks in the city, such as the English Garden.
